John has personally brokered and managed commercial transactions for over thirty years. Early in his career, Lucero assisted entrepreneurs in finding their first locations and the funding needed to succeed. Those businesses outgrew their locations over the years, and Lucero helped them sell and buy and continue to prosper.
With those initial closings, he discovered the positive power that real estate embodies in driving attainable and sustainable housing, economic opportunity, and improving neighborhoods, schools, neighborhood businesses, and lives. He has maintained that set of beliefs throughout his career.
Under John’s visionary leadership, iMPAX Real Estate Group and Lucero Development Services have left an indelible mark on the real estate industry. They have created and preserved over 4,000 housing units, fostering economic growth, workforce development, and education projects. John has demonstrated his commitment to the community and his profession through his instrumental role in formalizing the work of numerous local and national industry associations and boards. His co-founding of the Colorado Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (CAHREP) and its integration into the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) is a significant milestone that underscores his influence and expertise in the field. His contributions to these associations and boards have advanced the real estate industry and promoted diversity and inclusion.
He served on the Denver Water Board of Commissioners for fourteen years, contributing to policies such as the Colorado River Cooperative Agreement and significant infrastructure projects such as the North Water Treatment Plant. His six-year tenure on Denver’s Zoning Code Task Force resulted in a complete rewrite of the 55-year-old zoning code, influencing the City’s land use policies. He also served two terms as Chair of Historic Denver, Inc., a testament to his passion for Denver, historic preservation, and adaptive reuse of historic and landmarked properties. His community involvement extends to his fundraising and personal contributions to his favorite charities.
Initially appointed by then-Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Lucero served as the Deputy Director of Denver’s Office of Economic Development across three administrations. In this role, he commissioned the City’s gentrification and displacement study and corrective strategies and formed long-term partnerships with local Realtor associations that remain in place today. He led Denver’s first strategic Housing Plan in over twenty-five years, setting the annual strategic housing plans and outcomes reporting in motion. His strategic planning and leadership skills were instrumental in shaping Denver’s economic development landscape. For instance, he coauthored the Economic Development Strategic Plan, where Mayor Hancock, in a speech, introduced Lucero as “one of the architects of Denver’s economic recovery.”
Lucero remains an active Realtor® volunteer and has served in countless leadership roles on boards, task forces, and local, state, and national committees. He enjoys the political arena of public policy and the legislative process due to the personal experiences of his family, friends, and clients. His active involvement in the industry is demonstrated by his leadership in the Colorado Association of Realtors® (CAR) Legislative Policy Committee, where he chaired the housing subcommittee.
His peers have recognized John Lucero’s extraordinary achievement in the listing, selling, and referring real property by the Denver Board of Realtors® (DBR) Excellence Roundtable in his first and subsequent years in practice, a remarkable feat. His contributions to the industry were acknowledged, and he was selected as the DBR’s REALTOR® of the Year, a prestigious recognition. His service was also honored with several DBR and Denver Metro Association of Realtors® (DMAR) Distinguished Service Awards, the Colorado Association of Realtors® (CAR) Political Service Award, and induction into the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Hall of Fame. He received the DMAR Oliver Frascona Lifetime Achievement Award and is a NAR Golden R® Presidents Circle member, further solidifying his status as a respected figure in the industry. John attended Colorado State University, where he studied civil engineering, which is the foundation of his passion and successes in real estate development. His educational background in civil engineering has equipped him with the technical knowledge and skills necessary for property development and project management. John enjoys spending time with his family, having fun on the golf course, hosting multi-course dinners with long-time friends, gardening, and traveling internationally. You can also find him at nearly every home game of the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Broncos, where he is a long-time season ticket holder for both franchises.
